Annual Tradition Fun For Students and Teachers

     Spirit Week is a Waterloo tradition held every fall to celebrate the upcoming Homecoming event. This year, spirit week was celebrated October 10- October 14. Each year there is a variety of dress up themes. The themes this fall included: Pajama Day, Mix-n-Match Day, Farmer Day and Viking Spirit Day. Past themes have included: Twin Day, Nerd Day, Favorite Team Day, Senior Citizen Day and Superhero Day.
     The most popular day this year was Pajama Day. "It was fun to wear comfy clothes when usually you have to be more professional," shared Mrs. Huth, an English teacher at Waterloo. Senior Karly Wise agreed: "Pajama Day was my favorite".
     The students' least favorite day was Mix-n-Match Day, but Mrs. Dean, Waterloo Spanish teacher, dislikes Farmer Day the most. "It's an everyday style for Waterloo," stated Dean.

Granparents Day Out of this World!

On Thursday, October 13th Waterloo Elementary School held its 25th annual Grandparents Day. Organized by first grade teacher, Mrs. Sandi Arbogast, this year’s event included over 700 grandparents and their Waterloo grandchildren, marking an all time record for attendance. Space themed murals painted by Waterloo bus driver, Debbie White, reinforced the event’s theme: Reading is Out of this World. Grandparents and students wore themed t-shirts as well designed by Waterloo graduate, Jarrod McClellan.

Grandparents Day “was established in 1987 by first grade teacher, Mrs. Linda Nicolaus,” explained Mrs. Arbogast. When NIcolaus retired in 1995, Arbogast promised “to carry on the tradition”. Arbogast has kept this promise and chaired the event every year since.

This year’s activities included student performances, craft making, scavenger hunts and a book fair in the elementary school gym. Grandparents also ate with their grandchildren in the cafeteria for lunch. First grade student, Veronica England, stated, “the play [the students] put on for the grandparents” was her favorite part of the day. First grader, Spencer Shepard, liked “getting pictures” with his grandparents and student, Nate Roberts, liked reading “the bat poem”.

“Grandparents Day has always been very important to me, “ shared Arbogast. “Each year we are giving the grandparents the opportunity to came and share part of the day with their grandchildren in a place that is special to them.”

Vikings Secure League Title

On Tuesday night the Waterloo Boys Soccer team secured the league title with a 6-1 victory over the Woodridge Bulldogs. The Vikings’ offense started off strong, securing two goals in the first ten minutes of the game despite the poor field conditions. “The home field was not an advantage because the field was underwater,” commented senior team captain Zach Morgan. Regardless, the Vikings continued their momentum throughout the night led by the motivation “to win the PTC,” explained senior captain Ryan Baswell.

In the end, senior, Jake Podnar, scored four goals with Baswell, and junior,Jared Umstot, both contributing one. The Vikings defense also succeeded in holding firm, limiting the Bulldogs to a single goal.

“It was a very important game. The game won the league for us,” emphasized Coach Steve Knapp. Also thrilled with the victory, team captain Podnar credited the Vikings with being “the better team”.

Cross Country: The Not-So-Minor Fall Sport

When Waterloo students think about fall sports, what comes to mind? Football? Soccer?Volleyball maybe? Unfortunately, there seems to be a lone sport literally left in the dust- Cross Country.

    The cross country season begins the same time football, soccer, and the other fall sports do, and practice is not just a walk in the park. “Practices are very physical. We run at least five miles each practice,” comments Mr.Drugan, head coach of Waterloo’s cross country team. “I also have to come up with new workouts regularly so they [the runners] don’t get used to the same things every day.” Additionally, the practices are as mental as they are physical. “It is a very mental sport,” says Coach Drugan. “Knowing how far these runs can be, you have to keep telling yourself that you can do it, so it takes a lot of effort and hard work. You have to not only be a good runner, but have a good disposition.”

    Clearly, the members of the Viking cross country program have put in the necessary effort and hard work. “For being a minor sport, we have at least one person qualify [for state] each year,” says Coach Drugan. In 2007, the Vikings made it all the way to state finals. “We are definitely successful,” emphasizes Drugan. “You don’t see many schools do things like this.”

    Drawing inspiration from past success, the team is striving to continue the streak despite their low numbers. “This year, we only have two boys on the team: junior, Terry Powell and senior, Tyler Cooper,” explains Coach Drugan. “The boys don’t even have a record this year, because you need five people for a team, so the two compete individually.” Last year, the boys were district runner-up, and one of the best teams in school history. Consisting of only one junior, two sophomores and one freshman, the girls’ team is “very young,” says Drugan. “They do a great job, and are trying to get better. They are still learning, but next year, we could have a really solid team,” he added.

    Reflecting on the team’s needs, Drugan states, “What we really need is numbers for the boys. When Tyler graduates this year that will leave us with only one boy on the team. We need a few good men to come and join cross country!”

    School support would be greatly appreciated from the team’s members. The next cross country meet is Saturday, October 8th, at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds. The Portage Trail Conference meet will be on October 15th.

Volleyball Team on Track for Championship

The members of the Waterloo Viking Volleyball team are looking to defend their Portage Trail Conference championship from a year ago, and so far, the girls are on the right track. The Vikings are 12-1 overall and 8-0 in the PTC holding sole possession of first place. The team’s only loss came at the hands of the state ranked 6th place team, the Jackson Polar Bears. The Vikings did not let the loss bring them down as they came back last week winning three games in three days.

The game of the week came last Thursday night as the Vikings traveled to Southeast to face their biggest PTC opponent. During an earlier match-up between the teams, the Pirates put up a good fight. However, on Thursday, the Vikings delivered a clean three game sweep to give themselves a two game lead in the conference. On the heels of this win, the Vikings expect nothing less than to put another year on their PTC banner.

Marching Machine Brings Home 1st Place Win

On Saturday September 17^th the Waterloo High School Marching Machine took first place in a band competition at the 33^rd annual Ravenna Balloon-A-Fair. Celebrating the theme Patchwork Skies, the Balloon-A-Fair, which took place September 15th through the 18th, filled the skies with over twenty hot air balloons. Waterloo’s band, competing against four other local bands, played the school fight song, “The Victors,” as well as, “Gimme Some Lovin” and “Soul Man”. The band received a first place plaque for their win.

Vikings Fight Back for Win Against Bulldogs

    This past Tuesday, the Viking boys' soccer team quickly fell behind to the Woodridge Bulldogs 2-0. The Vikings overcame the deficit and narrowed the lead to 2-1 after senior captain Zach Morgan scored off of a penalty kick late in the second half. The Vikings kept the momentum going into the second half while senior captain Jacob Podnar added two goals to give the Vikings a 3-2 victory.
     In a post game interview, Coach Knapp affirmed this was a “good win for the team.” Knapp added that the first 15 minutes for the Vikings started off lethargic, but the rest of the game was dominated by Waterloo. When asked about the strengths of the games, Knapp stated, “We finished off of our corner kicks and made dangerous chances in front of the goal.”
    With the victory over the Bulldogs, the Vikings command a first place lead in the Portage Trail Conference with a record of 3-1 while Woodridge follows closely behind in second. This was a major win for the Vikings' season who now are on a three game winning streak.

The Future of Grades at Waterloo

Remember the days when report cards were issued every nine weeks, and interim reports were sent home every four weeks? Well, that has not changed, but a new online grading program will allow students to no longer have to wait to see their grades, and neither will their parents.

Starting soon, Gradelink, an online grading system, will be viewable to all Waterloo students and parents from a link on the school's website. Each student will receive a personal username and password that ensures complete privacy and security. This way, parents and students can check their grades whenever they want. When the system is established, there will be a set time each week that teachers update their classes. "The system’s purpose is so that parents and students alike can have better communications concerning grades instead of just the usual interim and report card,” explains one of the school’s computer technicians, Mr. Dockery.

There is a special feature especially for parents. Parents can set the program to notify them through an e-mail if their child receives a grade below a B, C, D, or F. It is up to the parents to decide at which grade they should be notified. Positive reports can be issued as well. “It is really a great thing to have,” stated Mr. Dockery. "There has been a positive feedback from the teachers. It is very parent-student friendly."

But what do the students think? Even more, what do the parents?

Evan Baughman, a sophomore at Waterloo High School, likes the program. “I think it’s a good thing,” Baughman stated. “Your parents will know at all times how you’re doing instead of guessing.” Jacob Springer, a junior, has similar views. “I think it’s great. It is nice how you can check your grades every day instead of every nine weeks. It is helpful for those who are struggling with grades because you and your parents can see the problem and fix it.” Preston Esler, a freshman, comments, “It is cool and helpful for parents and students,” but adds, “It is on the boundary of going a bit overboard."

Pam Wise, a Waterloo High School parent, thinks, “It is a great way to follow your child’s progress.” When asked if it will make students put forth more effort, she states,“It might. The students need to put forth the effort and parents need to follow up on it." Wise added,"I really appreciate the new program.”

Gradelink will be open to the school on September 20th, 2011.

Championship Team Honored

The 1971 Waterloo Vikings varsity football team was honored at halftime during the Vikings’ home game last Friday night against Lutheran East. Described as “always the underdog” by team member, Dr. Merle Kennedy, the 1971 team was the only football team in school history to win a Portage County League championship. Picked in the preseason to finish last, the Vikings instead “brought the greatest grid campaign in the school’s history to a close” with a championship winning 9-1 season, according to coach, Marc Bost.

Hoping to inspire the current Vikings, stand out champion, Tom Jenior, explained that there are many similarities between the 1971 championship team and the 2011 Vikings. In 2010, the Vikings had a record of 4-6, had no All-League players, and were projected to finish next to last in the league standings in their 2011 season. Similarly the 1971 Vikings were also coming off a 4-6 season and had no returning All-league players. Just like the current team, “we had to work harder” to win says Coach Bost.

The Waterloo Band, majorettes and Color Guard provide a tunnel for the 1971 champions.

Champion player and current Waterloo Elementary teacher, Bob Hamilton, attributes the team’s success to unity: “We were a group of guys that got along and jelled together.” This idea is certainly echoed in the 2011 Vikings’ team motto: Family, All In.

Past players are proud of their accomplishments but wish to have seen more championships. “ I wish there would have been more teams to be honored in 40 years,” says ’71 sophomore player, Jerry Kline. Spurring the current and upcoming teams to never lose hope, Dr. Merle Kennedy encouraged the current and future players to “work hard, stay in shape” and believe in themselves.

Vikings Anticipate Conquest Over Bulldogs

Tuesday night the boys' soccer team travels to Woodridge to challenge the Portage Trail Conference defending champion Bulldogs. As of now the Vikings (2-1) are holding a 1st place lead in the P.T.C for 2011, while Woodridge (1-0-1) is in 2nd place. When asked about the game, Coach Knapp said, "There is definitely a chance to win this game". The Vikings are coming off of a 2-0 win against the St. Thomas Knights and hope to keep the streak going. Come support the vikings at 7 o'clock Tuesday night at Woodridge for one of the most important games of the Vikings' season!
